Paramount Pictures’ newest Transformers film, Transformers One, has debuted to positive reviews from critics and promising early box office projections. The animated prequel, directed by Josh Cooley, tells the story of how Autobots Optimus Prime and Megatron’s friendship began on their home planet of Cybertron.
Released in theaters on September 20, 2024, Transformers One currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews. Critics have favored its fresh take on the Transformers mythology. Voice actors Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, and others have also received praise for their performances.
This critical acclaim contrasts with most past live-action Transformers films. Only 2018’s Bumblebee earned a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the same 90% score. Reviews for the other live-action films ranged from 16% up to 57%. Transformers One marks a change in direction by being the first animated film in the franchise.
Early box office projections estimate Transformers One will make between $37-45 million its opening weekend domestically. While lower than recent live-action installments, analysts are optimistic based on the success of animated films like Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That 2018 film debuted at $35.3 million but made $375.5 million worldwide thanks to strong reviews and word-of-mouth. Its sequel capitalized further with $690 million globally.
Paramount hopes Transformers One follows a similar trajectory. Successful previous animated films from the studio like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem proved profitable even with modest budgets. A hit could mean more Transformers animated projects in addition to live-action films, mirroring how Spider-Man is approached.
With its nostalgia, stars, and return to animation, Transformers One is poised to revitalize the iconic franchise. Whether initial box office returns prove it, early signs suggest the new formula may reconnect with longtime fans as well as introduce new audiences to the Transformers world.
