Chicago P.D. Star LaRoyce Hawkins Discusses Atwater's New Romance

In the latest episode of the crime drama Chicago P.D., Officer Kevin Atwater faces new challenges both personally and professionally. The episode introduced a forensic psychologist named Val Soto who sparks interest in Atwater, offering him an opportunity to take a break from his stressful job. Their professional paths cross when Val is brought in to assist the Intelligence unit with a complex case.

Val recognizes the immense pressures Atwater faces as a police officer. He juggles responsibilities at work while also caring for tenants in his building and supporting his family. Though they initially disagreed in their approach to a witness, Val understands the toll his line of work can take. She invites Atwater to her home, hoping he will agree to turn off stressful thoughts for a brief time.

Actor LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Atwater, said his character is grateful for a chance to unwind. “Those windows of escape are important,” Hawkins stated, acknowledging short periods of respite can help cope with demanding careers. While it’s unclear if a relationship will form, Hawkins notes Atwater has matured and may handle romance differently than before if he chooses to pursue it.

Val’s role as a psychiatrist provides opportunities for meaningful storyline development. Introducing her character addresses Hawkins’ desire to show Atwater seeking mental health support. As a first responder, Atwater witnesses trauma that affects him deeply. Real officers often need assistance themselves after helping others in high-stress situations.

Going forward, Hawkins teased viewers may see a “lighter Atwater” as new episodes air. His character serves as a stabilizing force for the Intelligence unit during difficult times. How the potential romance with Val unfolds remains uncertain, but it offers a chance to explore important issues like self-care within law enforcement. Fans will watch eagerly to see how this and other storylines progress for Atwater in the weeks ahead.
