Singer Lizzo responded humorously to weight-related discussions with a Halloween costume reference. The costume referenced a “South Park” episode parodying expensive weight loss medications by describing an imaginary drug called “Lizzo.” It presented the drug as a more affordable option allowing patients to “eat everything they want” without feeling guilt.
On Instagram, Lizzo showed off her “LizzOzempic” costume. She dressed as a prescription drug package with a measuring tape wrapped around her waist. The packaging included mock advertisements promoting “self love” and “confidence” as side effects. It also listed these effects as “FDA-approved.”
Lizzo’s costume directly engaged with the “South Park” special from May. In it, her name was suggested as an alternative to the expensive drug Ozempic. The Halloween costume echoed the television program’s idea. It also seemed meant to address recent rumors that the singer had used Ozempic for weight loss, which she has denied.
Additionally, Lizzo posted dance videos with the “LizzOzempic” costume cutout of “South Park” character Eric Cartman. In one, dialogue from the episode played as Lizzo smiled and gave a double middle finger to the camera. The theatrical videos depicted Lizzo looking wistfully at pizza to the song “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, humorously interacting with her own costume’s parody.
When the “South Park” episode first aired in May, Lizzo said she was unoffended and embraced its promotion of self-love. With her Halloween costume, she again embraced the parody while furthering her message of body positivity. The costume transformed potential criticism into an empowering statement about societal weight standards and body image.
