Actress Margaret Qualley has signed on to play the leading role in the new Gothic horror film “Victorian Psycho.” The psychological thriller is based on an upcoming novel of the same name being published in early 2025. It will reunite Qualley with director Zachary Wigon, who she previously worked with on the acclaimed drama “Sanctuary.”
Set in 1858 England, the story follows Winifred Notty, a young governess hired to teach the children at the isolated Ensor House. As Notty adjusts to her new role, staff at the estate begin mysteriously disappearing. This raises suspicions about Notty’s character among the property’s owners.
The screenplay was written by Virginia Feito, the author of the source novel. In the film, Qualley will portray the eccentric and disturbed Notty. Speaking about the project, Qualley said she is excited to collaborate again with Wigon and explore the “twisted world” of the story. Wigon expressed enthusiasm for bringing Notty’s complex character to life on screen.
Producer Dan Kagan praised Feito’s original narrative. Kagan, known for independent films like “Longlegs,” said the novel “entirely delivered” its promise of a uniquely thrilling story from start to finish. The adaptation allows Feito to follow in the footsteps of Gillian Flynn, who famously adapted her own bestselling novel “Gone Girl” for film.
Qualley and Wigon previously worked together on the well-received independent drama “Sanctuary.” Qualley’s career has gained momentum since roles in “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” and the body horror film “The Substance.” Production on “Victorian Psycho” is scheduled to begin after the release of Feito’s source novel early next year.
