Shinfield Studios in Berkshire, southern England, is going through a substantial leadership transition. Joint Managing Directors Nick Smith and Ian Johnson have announced their retirement. Their last day will end this year, capping off a revolutionary era for the cutting-edge film and television production center.
Smith and Johnson were instrumental in turning the studio into a world-class production facility. Under their leadership, Shinfield Studios has attracted notable projects such as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the feature adaption of The Magic Faraway Tree, and the impending Star Wars series The Acolyte.
The couple was important in securing the one-million-square-foot property and supervising its construction. They guided the studio from its early planning stages to full operating status earlier this year.
Following their departure, Dean Horne, Vice President of Global Studio Operations, and Charlene St Aubyn, Financial Controller, will assume leadership. Both leaders have contributed significantly to the studio’s success since its inception, ensuring a smooth handover.
Peter Rumbold, CEO of Shadowbox Studios, Shinfield’s parent business, expressed gratitude for Smith and Johnson’s services. “I want to thank Nick and Ian for their dedication to creating a world-class film and television studio in Shinfield,” Rumbold told the crowd. “They have set the stage for our outstanding operations team and secured an impressive lineup of productions through 2025 and beyond.”
This leadership transition coincides with tremendous expansion in the UK film and television industry. Shinfield Studios, just 40 miles from London, is a valuable asset to the region’s creative industry, with 18 sound stages to serve both local and international projects.
As Smith and Johnson prepare to retire, the studio remains committed to providing premier production facilities. With Horne and St Aubyn at the helm, the studio is well-positioned to maintain the momentum started by its founders.
