A special virtual screening of the silent short film “About Mannequin” will captivate audiences, showcasing cinematic skill and women’s tenacity. The London Philharmonic Orchestra will perform live at this event, which Women organize In Film.
Aruzhan Dossymkozha directs this black-and-white film, which tells a disturbing story set in a mystery wedding store. It explores themes of family, oppression, and the supernatural. The story revolves around a young family whose lives change radically after seeing a cursed wedding dress, forcing viewers to doubt their perception of reality.
Producer and principal actress Ayanat Ysmagambetova Ksenbai described the film as a personal journey. “Making ‘About Mannequin’ has been the dream of a lifetime,” the actress stated. “I am proud to show Kazakhstan to the world and to tell the story of a brave woman overcoming difficult challenges.”
The film’s score, composed by Giorgi Rtskhiladze and played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, adds to the story’s emotional effect. Rtskhiladze stated that the film and its original song “More Than Mannequin” intended to emphasize “women’s triumph over tyranny,” focusing on problems of gender inequality and oppression.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s chief executive, David Burke, stressed the project’s artistic relevance. “We are delighted to contribute to this film that captures the magic of the silent era, where music and acting combine to tell extraordinary stories,” he told reporters.
The virtual screening will be conducted between December 6 and December 13. Ksenbai and producer Kim Magnusson will participate in a special Q&A session on December 7. This event highlights a riveting piece of Kazakh cinema and emphasizes the importance of women’s storylines in contemporary film.
