The Tokyo International Film Festival unveiled three new initiatives for its 39th edition Sunday, adding a competitive strand for undiscovered Japanese talent, a new award honoring women in cinema and a relaunch of its pan-Asian showcase section. The festival runs Oct. 26 through Nov. 4 in Tokyo, hosted by Unijapan.
The festival’s Nippon Cinema Now section will now include Best Film and Special Jury Prize awards, giving emerging Japanese filmmakers a dedicated competitive platform. Festival director Takeo Hisamatsu said the new competition aims to spotlight exceptional new Japanese talent and introduce it internationally. Organizers plan to bring in international industry figures to sit alongside Japanese jurors, broadening the perspective used to judge entries.
The festival is also introducing the Kashiko Kawakita Award, named for the producer and curator known as “Madame Kawakita,” who spent decades bringing European cinema to Japanese audiences and helped lay the groundwork for what became Japan’s National Film Archive. An all-female committee selected the inaugural recipient, film critic Sahoko Hata, who spent years in France acquiring French classics for Japanese distribution, including Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless.” Hata described the honor as tied to a story she felt compelled to pass on, recalling a private remark Kawakita once made to her about the burdens women carry professionally. The award will be presented within the festival’s Women’s Empowerment section.
Rounding out the changes, the festival’s Crosscut Asia strand returns in an expanded format called Crosscut Asia+, featuring Rafael Manuel’s “Filipiñana,” Kamila Andini’s “Four Seasons in Java” and Polen Ly’s “Becoming Human” among its selections. The festival’s industry market, TIFFCOM, runs Oct. 28-30 alongside the main event. The additions arrive as festivals across the circuit face renewed scrutiny over gender representation among selected filmmakers, a debate that has surfaced prominently at other major festivals this fall.
