Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is in stable condition after being stabbed during a home invasion at his Mumbai apartment early Thursday. The 54-year-old star received emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital for multiple wounds, including a serious spine injury.
Police say the attack happened around 2:30 AM when Khan found an intruder in his 11th-floor Bandra home. During a fight with the suspect, the actor was hurt while attempting to defend his staff.
According to Dr. Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital, the actor suffered severe damage to his thoracic spinal cord as a result of a knife getting stuck in his spine. Doctors took two and a half hours to take out the weapon and fix the leaking of spinal fluid. Khan also needed plastic surgery for serious cuts on his hand and neck.
Deputy Police Commissioner Dixit Gedam informed ANI news service that an investigation is happening. The actor and the intruder got into a fight. “The actor is hurt and is getting medical care,” Gedam said. Seven police teams are searching the city, looking at security tapes, and asking staff questions.
Khan’s team described the event as an “attempted burglary” and requested that the media and fans be patient while the police investigate. They stated that Khan’s family, including his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, is safe. The couple just came back from their holiday in Switzerland.
The attack shocked India’s film business, where Khan is well-respected. Khan has worked in Hindi pictures for thirty years. He is the son of cricket star Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore. He started his career with “Parampara” in 1993 and is known for his great efforts in “Dil Chahta Hai” (2001), “Omkara” (2006), and “Devara Part 1” this year. He received a National Award for “Hum Tum” in 2004.
Hospital staff say that Khan is now stable and receiving medical care. Police are still looking for the attacker.
