Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have stepped away from creative control of the James Bond franchise, placing Amazon MGM Studios in charge of shaping its future. Under a new agreement, the studio will lead development on upcoming Bond films, marking a departure from the long-standing family oversight that has defined the series for more than six decades.
Wilson, who has been involved in the franchise for nearly 60 years, announced his retirement from filmmaking, stating that he will now focus on art and charitable projects. Broccoli, while remaining active in Hollywood, has shifted her focus to other productions, including a Broadway musical and an adaptation of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s memoir.
The announcement follows a prolonged period of uncertainty surrounding the next installment in the series. Since No Time to Die concluded Daniel Craig’s run in 2021, no script, director, or lead actor has been confirmed. Although a character bible has circulated within the studio, production on a new film remains at least a year away.
Amazon, which acquired MGM for $8.5 billion in 2021, had previously held a 50% stake in the Bond franchise but lacked decision-making authority. The new joint venture restructures that arrangement, allowing Amazon MGM Studios to take a more active role in the development process.
The Broccolis had resisted efforts to expand Bond beyond traditional theatrical releases, declining various proposals for spinoffs and streaming projects. The only approved expansion under their leadership was 007: Road to a Million, a reality competition series. With Amazon now controlling the creative direction, additional projects, including television series and character-focused films, may become part of the franchise.
Shortly after the deal was announced, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos took to social media, engaging with fans on potential casting choices for the next Bond. While no decisions have been made, the move signals a shift in approach.
Another major decision ahead involves identifying the individual or team responsible for overseeing the franchise. Other major film properties, such as Marvel, Star Wars, and DC, have appointed specific executives to guide long-term strategy. Amazon’s head of film, Courtenay Valenti, has experience managing high-profile franchises, though additional leadership may be necessary to maintain consistency within the Bond universe.
James Bond remains one of Hollywood’s most valuable intellectual properties, with the series generating more than $7.8 billion in global box office revenue across 25 films. Amazon has invested heavily in theatrical and streaming projects, with mixed results in launching new blockbuster franchises. The studio now takes on the task of managing one of the industry’s longest-running and most recognizable film series.
