A high-stakes legal dispute between film director Justin Baldoni and actress Blake Lively has taken a dramatic turn, with Baldoni filing a $400 million counterclaim in New York federal court. The lawsuit targets Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, The New York Times, and other parties.
Baldoni’s legal team, led by attorney Bryan Freedman, claims to have new evidence that challenges Lively’s previous allegations of harassment. The amended complaint includes text messages that suggest a previously cordial working relationship between Baldoni and Lively during film production.
The conflict centers around the film adaptation of “It Ends With Us,” with both sides presenting conflicting narratives about events during production. According to Baldoni’s lawsuit, Lively made frequent requests to change dialogue, wardrobe, and film editing, allegedly overstepping her role as an actress.
Lively’s original lawsuit, filed in December, tells a different story. She alleges sexual harassment, breach of contract, and what she describes as a deliberate smear campaign against her. Her legal documents include details of a group meeting with production team members to address concerns about inappropriate behavior.
The dispute has now entered the public sphere with Baldoni launching a website, thelawsuitinfo.com, which publishes his counterclaim and a detailed timeline of events dating back to January 2019. While Lively’s legal team views the website as an intimidation tactic, Baldoni’s representatives say it provides transparent documentation.
A recent six-minute voice recording adds another layer to the controversy. In the recording, Baldoni apologizes to Lively and acknowledges potential communication missteps.
“This fresh evidence corroborates what we knew all along,” Freedman stated, alleging a coordinated effort to damage Baldoni’s reputation.
Both parties are set to meet in court on February 3 for a preliminary hearing about a potential gag order. A full trial is scheduled for March 2026, promising to further unravel this complex legal battle.
The case highlights the ongoing tensions in Hollywood surrounding professional conduct and communication between actors and directors.
