Keanu Reeves has revealed that a sequel to Constantine has taken a major step forward, with a pitch presented to DC Studios and approval granted to begin script development.
“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’” Reeves told Inverse. “So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
Reeves confirmed that the sequel will take place in the same world as the 2005 film. “We’re not going off that,” he said, adding that John Constantine’s struggles will intensify in the next chapter.
Francis Lawrence, who directed the original film, expressed optimism about the project’s progress. “We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things,” he said. “We have had the character in the back of our minds for 20 years, just percolating on ideas and stories.”
Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has joined the development process, working alongside Reeves and Lawrence. Lawrence stated that they are “pretty close on having an object that is really workable.”
Since the release of the original film, the Constantine character has continued to appear in various live-action and animated projects, with Matt Ryan portraying the role in television adaptations. Reeves, who has spoken about wanting to revisit the character since 2019, has now confirmed that the long-discussed sequel is moving forward.
