Swedish director Ruben Östlund is set to make waves with his latest film, “The Entertainment System Is Down,” which has already secured international distribution deals and boasts a star-studded cast including Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, and Daniel Brühl.
The film, which began shooting in January 2024, explores a unique scenario: passengers trapped on a long-haul flight between England and Australia with no in-flight entertainment. This premise aligns with Östlund’s reputation for insightful social commentary, examining human behavior during moments of unexpected boredom and stress.
A24 has acquired U.S. distribution rights, with additional pre-sale agreements from major international distributors like Lionsgate Films (UK), Lucky Red/Teodora Film (Italy), and Road Pictures (China). The project represents a significant pan-European collaboration, involving production companies from Sweden, Germany, and France.
Filming is taking place on a specially converted Boeing 747 studio set, with production scheduled to continue through May 2024. The ensemble cast includes Nicholas Braun, Tobias Menzies, Connor Swindells, and Swedish artist Benjamin Ingrosso, among others.
“Ruben’s artistic vision stands out and will once again provoke thoughts and discussions,” said Nadine Rothschild, head of sales at Coproduction Office. She noted the project has achieved “rarely seen prices for independent distributors.”
The film’s financial backing comes from multiple sources, including the Swedish Film Institute, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and media organizations like BBC Film, Canal+, Disney+, and ARTE France. This diverse support underscores the international interest in Östlund’s innovative storytelling approach.
As the film continues production, industry watchers are eagerly anticipating how Östlund will transform a seemingly mundane scenario into a compelling exploration of human nature and modern travel experiences.
