A new science fiction film is set to explore the complex relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, with acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel and writer Peter Harness adapting Stanislaw Lem’s novel “The Inquest of Pilot Pirx.”
The film will follow Commander Pirx and his unique space mission crew, which includes both human and android members. At the heart of the story is a challenging scenario where crew members must identify who is human and who is artificial, while also questioning their own identity.
Hirschbiegel, known for his Academy Award-nominated film “Downfall,” brings extensive experience to the project. His previous works include “Das Experiment” and the Sundance Film Festival award-winning “13 Minutes.” Harness, fresh from his success with the Apple TV+ series “Constellation,” will write the screenplay.
The project promises to be more than a typical science fiction film. Producers Esko Rips and Sam Taylor highlighted the story’s unique approach to exploring themes of trust and betrayal in a confined space. They praised Hirschbiegel and Harness for their ability to create deeply human narratives.
“I have greatly admired the genius of Stanislaw Lem for many years,” Hirschbiegel said. Harness echoed his excitement, describing the project as a “journey into a weird and fantastical universe.”
Science fiction novelist Adrian Tchaikovsky is also attached to the project, which will be produced by Nafta Films and Film and Music Entertainment. The film aims to push the boundaries of the genre by drawing from Lem’s rich literary legacy.
The story takes an unexpected turn when an unknown saboteur threatens the mission, adding a thrilling element to the philosophical exploration of artificial intelligence and human nature.
As the film industry continues to delve into AI-related themes, this adaptation stands out for its sophisticated approach to understanding the complex relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
