Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value has moved squarely into awards-season focus after a high-profile Cannes run and new momentum around its stars, with industry coverage highlighting Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård as acting contenders. The family drama won the Grand Prix in Cannes on May 24, and U.S. distributor Neon has set a November 7 limited release that places the film in peak consideration windows.
The film follows two sisters reuniting with their estranged father, a famed director attempting a comeback, with Elle Fanning playing an American star drawn into the family’s creative tug-of-war. Trier co-wrote with longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt; the cast includes Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas alongside Reinsve and Skarsgård. The project premiered in Cannes competition on May 21 and has been framed as a character piece built around performance and process.
Since Cannes, the campaign has sharpened. Norway selected Sentimental Value as its official submission for the Academy’s international feature race, advancing a bid that will unfold on a timetable that includes shortlists on December 16 and nominations on January 22. The national pick arrives as U.S. release plans align with awards milestones and as early-season handicapping points to acting, directing and screenplay possibilities.
Variety’s latest spotlight centers on how the performances could play with voters, noting Reinsve’s reunion with Trier after The Worst Person in the World and Skarsgård’s turn as a domineering auteur-father. The attention complements the film’s festival pedigree and widening distribution footprint, including a September 12 opening in Norway ahead of its American rollout.
