Jeffrey Wright Calls Backlash to His Jim Gordon Casting “Racist and Stupid”

The actor says criticisms of his Jim Gordon in The Batman ignore modern realities as the 2027 sequel moves forward.

Jeffrey Wright has addressed the backlash to his casting as Jim Gordon in The Batman, calling it “so f—ing racist and stupid” and saying the argument is “absent all logic.” In remarks published this week from a recent interview, Wright said the debate ignores how comic-book films evolve with society and noted that Gotham, modeled on New York City, should look and feel multicultural if it aims for contemporary authenticity. He added that he feels ownership of these stories as a participant while honoring the open-ended spirit imagined by the characters’ creators.

Wright’s comments arrive as work continues on The Batman Part II, with the sequel dated for October 1, 2027 and expected to begin filming next year. Recent updates from collaborators suggest confidence in the script while cautioning fans against unfounded rumors, underscoring the slow-and-steady timeline for the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ 2022 noir take. Wright is set to return as Gordon alongside Robert Pattinson.

The original film earned more than $772 million worldwide and helped reset Gotham as a grimy, 1970s-inflected cityscape where Gordon and Batman operate as partners at street level. Wright’s performance drew praise for grounding the procedural feel of the story, an approach he referenced while arguing that modern adaptations should reflect the metropolis that inspired Gotham.

Reaction to this week’s remarks tracked familiar lines online, with many fans highlighting Wright’s work in the role and others returning to debates over “race-swapped” casting. Industry voices counter that inclusive casting has deep roots in franchise storytelling and point to the consistent commercial appetite for grounded versions of Batman since 2022. Wright’s focus, he said, is on the character’s integrity within a credible world rather than on purist objections.
