Showrunner Abe Sylvia is shedding new light on the most startling moment in Palm Royale’s Season 2 premiere, framing a sudden offscreen death as both a dark comic twist and a window into the show’s sharpened view of Palm Beach cruelty. In the opening episode, elderly suitor Axel, once in love with the real Norma Dellacorte, is found dead shortly after a private meeting with Norma, now revealed to be the impostor Agnes. Sylvia told TheWrap he imagines Axel dying of a broken heart after finally learning that the woman he adored actually died decades earlier, while leaving room for viewers to wonder if Norma may have nudged fate along.
The episode begins with a lush fantasy sequence in which Maxine returns to the Palm Royale club stage to dance with Robert to Mel Tormé’s Comin’ Home Baby, only for the scene to collapse into the stark reality of Sunny Tides, the “home for wives who dare to have a feeling” where Maxine has been committed after the Season 1 Beach Ball debacle. Sylvia has linked the fictional facility to real Palm Beach institutions where wealthy men could consign inconvenient spouses out of sight, something he says informed both the satire and the horror of Maxine’s incarceration.
A detailed recap of the premiere shows how Axel’s death is staged as the culmination of several converging schemes. Dinah, having decided she cannot go through with marrying him, steps away to gather herself before confessing that she still loves her presumed dead husband. When she returns, Axel is already lifeless. At the same time, Maxine hides under Robert’s hospital bed and overhears Norma raging about a “terrible” woman she intends to destroy, underlining how threats to Norma’s invented identity tend to end badly for those who know the truth.
Robert himself survives the Beach Ball shooting, according to Sylvia in a separate interview, but remains gravely injured and uniquely dangerous to Norma because he knows she is really Agnes. The premiere positions his hospital-bed silence, and eventual awakening in later coverage, as a ticking clock for her hold on Palm Beach society.
Sylvia says Robert’s fate was mapped out from the moment writers began breaking Season 2, which also broadens the show’s focus beyond Maxine to give richer arcs to Evelyn, Linda and Mitzi. The premiere ends with Evelyn freeing Maxine from Sunny Tides and the pair vowing to “take Palm Beach,” forming what Sylvia calls an unlikely alliance that will collide with Norma’s renewed ruthlessness in the wake of Axel’s mysterious demise.
