Jake and Romy Reiner, the children of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, released a public statement mourning their parents’ deaths and urging restraint as the criminal case against their brother moves through court. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the siblings said, calling the loss “horrific and devastating” and describing their parents as “our best friends.”
Prosecutors have charged their brother, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, with two counts of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbings. He made an initial court appearance in Los Angeles this week, did not enter a plea, and agreed to delay his arraignment until Jan. 7, 2026, according to court proceedings and reporting on the hearing. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the case carries a potential sentence of life without parole or capital punishment, though prosecutors have not said if they will seek the death penalty and have indicated they will consider the family’s wishes in that decision.
Authorities have released few details about a possible motive. Investigators say the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home on Sunday, Dec. 14, and Nick Reiner was arrested later that day without incident after police said evidence pointed homicide detectives to him. Reports have described an argument involving Nick Reiner at a holiday gathering the night before the killings, though officials have not publicly tied that account to the charging allegations.
Rob Reiner, 78, built a decades-long career as an actor and director, including an Emmy-winning run on “All in the Family” and films such as “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Stand by Me,” “Misery,” “The Princess Bride” and “A Few Good Men.” Michele Singer Reiner, 70, worked as a photographer and producer, and friends and collaborators have issued tributes describing the couple’s impact on colleagues and civic causes.
