A week after filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home, investigators and prosecutors have laid out a formal case against the couple’s adult son while key details of the family’s final public night remain contested. Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors alleging he used a knife and citing a special circumstance tied to multiple murders, Los Angeles County officials said. The medical examiner later listed the causes of death as multiple sharp-force injuries.
Attention has centered on Conan O’Brien’s Dec. 13 holiday party, held the night before the killings, after conflicting accounts circulated about an argument involving father and son. A report from TheWrap said the Reiners attended and that Nick Reiner drew notice for awkward “social intrusions,” including interrupting a conversation between O’Brien and Bill Hader. The same report said descriptions of what happened next vary widely across unnamed-source accounts, with no attendee speaking publicly on the record.
Two days earlier, TheWrap published an interview with a party attendee who rejected claims of a blowup and dismissed reports that anyone tried to call police. The attendee said O’Brien told them, “I saw no fight,” while confirming Nick Reiner made guests uncomfortable by eavesdropping and lingering around conversations. Other accounts have described a loud argument at the party and Nick Reiner behaving erratically, but those details remain based on anonymous sourcing and have not been confirmed by police.
In court proceedings, Nick Reiner’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, has urged restraint as the case moves forward. Nick Reiner made a brief appearance this week before his arraignment was continued to Jan. 7, and he was later reported as not medically cleared for a separate appearance. O’Brien has not made a public statement about the party, and authorities have not said the gathering plays a role in the charging decision.
