Tom Hiddleston says he has finished his work on Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” and he is selling the film as a story-first swing rather than a nostalgia play. Speaking to British GQ, the actor called the project “monumental,” adding: “The centre of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before.”
Marvel has kept plot specifics locked down, but it has started feeding audiences carefully timed footage. The studio released a first teaser on Dec. 23 built around Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, then followed with a Dec. 30 spot that puts Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the foreground, positioning the film as a multiverse-scale event without opening the spoiler vault.
Hiddleston’s comments matter because Loki sits at the center of Marvel’s current timeline mechanics after his last appearance in the Disney+ series “Loki,” which wrapped its second season in November 2023. Since then, Marvel has teased the character’s next steps only in broad strokes, while confirming his return as part of the “Doomsday” ensemble.
Marvel has confirmed Joe and Anthony Russo will direct “Doomsday,” with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise in a new role as Victor von Doom. At San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, Downey framed the move as a chance to play “complicated characters,” after the Russos pitched Doom as essential to the next phase of Avengers storytelling.
A March 2025 Marvel announcement listed a cast that pulls from multiple corners of the franchise, including Hemsworth, Evans, Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, and legacy X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, signaling a film designed to collide brands and timelines on purpose. Marvel now lists the release date as Dec. 18, 2026.
