Bret Hanna-Shuford, a Broadway performer and one half of the “Broadway Husbands” social-media account, died early Saturday, Jan. 3, at 46, his husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, wrote in a post announcing the news. “Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family,” the statement said, adding, “Our hearts are broken, but we will continue to make him proud of us.”
Hanna-Shuford had been fighting hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, rare and aggressive conditions that can overlap and complicate treatment. A GoFundMe launched in late August 2025 described weeks of uncertainty and misdiagnoses before doctors confirmed HLH and T-cell lymphoma, then outlined plans for chemotherapy and the family’s need for help with medical bills and household expenses as he stepped away from work. As of Saturday, the fundraiser showed $315,747 raised from about 3.9K donations toward a $350,000 goal, with Stephen listed as the beneficiary.
Onstage, Hanna-Shuford built a resume across long-running shows and touring productions. He appeared in “The Little Mermaid,” worked on “Wicked” in a swing/understudy capacity, and performed in “Beauty and the Beast” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” with later Broadway credits that included “Paramour” and “Amazing Grace.” He also toured in “Dreamgirls” and “South Pacific,” and took part in Actors Fund benefit concerts. The Internet Broadway Database lists his birthplace as Beaumont, Texas, and his death in Orlando, Florida.
Beyond theatre, he picked up screen credits, including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and a role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” according to theatre reporting. With Stephen, he chronicled family life and LGBTQ parenting under the “Broadway Husbands” banner; the couple shared a son, Maverick. The GoFundMe organizers said contributions would continue supporting Stephen and Maverick with ongoing expenses.
