Filmmaker Sam Raimi has reopened the door—slightly—on the idea of returning to his era of Spider-Man, saying he would “love” to make another film with Tobey Maguire if the moment ever lines up. Speaking to the Associated Press while promoting his new movie Send Help, Raimi said audiences “would like to see” Maguire back again, then added that he does not want to interrupt the current run of Spider-Man movies built around Tom Holland.
Raimi’s comments arrive after he struck a very different tone days earlier on the press trail. In that earlier interview, he said it would not “be right” to “resurrect” his version of the story, framing his trilogy as a closed chapter and pointing to a new generation of filmmakers carrying the character forward. He described his time with Spider-Man as briefly holding the torch, then handing it on.
The whiplash reads less like a secret greenlight and more like a director trying to balance fan demand with franchise reality. Neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has announced any Raimi-led project tied to Maguire’s Spider-Man, and Raimi did not claim development is underway. His AP remarks centered on timing and continuity, with the director pointing to how deeply Holland’s Spider-Man is tied to the wider Marvel machine.
That machine already has its next Spider-Man chapter dated. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to open July 31, 2026, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing and Holland starring, according to Marvel’s official film page. The calendar matters because it leaves little room for another theatrical Spider-Man event without turning the brand into a traffic jam.
For fans hoping that Spider-Man: No Way Home was a launchpad for more Maguire, Raimi’s latest line lands as a warmer sentiment than a plan: he wants the chance, he does not have it, and he does not want to step on the version currently in motion.
