Kevin Hart is set to star in an untitled Netflix spy action comedy directed by McG, putting a high-profile project on the comedian’s expanding slate at the streamer. The film follows two rival spies whose double lives collide after they land in the same Lamaze class and their wives become friends, forcing the men into an uneasy partnership while they prepare for fatherhood. Production is being planned for later this year, with no release date announced.
Adam and Aaron Nee are writing the script with Jonathan Tropper. Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort are part of the producing team, giving Netflix a commercial package shaped for its action-comedy lane. Hart’s long relationship with the company gives the move a clear business logic: in 2021, he and HartBeat Productions signed a deal covering four star vehicles and a first-look film arrangement.
McG, born Joseph McGinty Nichol, built his feature career on slick, fast-moving studio entertainment, led by Charlie’s Angels, then shifted between theatrical work and streaming films, including Netflix’s Uglies. The new movie sends him back toward broad action comedy, a lane where speed, star chemistry and a simple hook often matter as much as plot mechanics.
The package carries a familiar risk for Netflix. Star-led genre films can draw quick attention on the service, yet they often face questions about shelf life once the opening-week curiosity fades. Some commentary around the project has already questioned if McG’s heightened style can serve a premise built on spies, marriage and fatherhood rather than drown it in noise.
Hart’s Netflix calendar already is crowded. The platform has dated 72 Hours, a Tim Story comedy about a 40-year-old executive pulled into a bachelor-party weekend, for July 24. Hart also has The Leading Man in development with John Cena, another action-comedy project centered on an actor and a hidden agent. Together, the projects point to Netflix’s continued bet on Hart as a bankable anchor for easy-to-market comedy-action premises.
