The five-season run of “The Bear” came to a close Friday with a series finale that found room, amid the grief of an ending, for a quiet tribute to Rob Reiner — the filmmaker and actor who died in December 2025 and whose final screen role was a guest arc on the show.
In the concluding episode, titled “The Original Beef of Chicagoland,” line cook Ebra (Edwin Lee Gibson) secures Carmy’s blessing to franchise the restaurant and calls consultant Albert Schnurr — Reiner’s character — to deliver the news. “Albert, we are in business,” Ebra tells him. “It’s perfect. I will have all the documents, email it to you immediately. Anything else I can do?” Although Albert’s side of the call goes unheard, Ebra’s response carries the whole weight of the tribute: “As you wish” — a direct lift from Westley’s famous line in Reiner’s 1987 film “The Princess Bride.”
Reiner appeared as Albert Schnurr in a three-episode arc during Season 4, playing a restaurant consultant brought in to advise the team. His character became a mentor specifically to Ebra, encouraging him to explore franchising the famed Beef sandwiches — a storyline that carried into the final season even after Reiner’s death.
Reiner had been expected to reprise the role in the fifth and final season, which began production in early 2026. He did not get to film any of it. Gibson, who worked closely with Reiner during Season 4, described the loss plainly. “It’s emotional when I think about it,” he said. “Because we go back in Season 5, and he’s not there, and we fully expected him to be there.
It changed a bit the trajectory of the story.” Gibson also reflected on the unexpected ease of their rapport on set. “I got to be his last scene partner, unfortunately,” he said. “But it was just really, really great moments with someone that you grew up watching in front of the camera, then behind the camera.”
Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in December 2025 in a double homicide at their Brentwood home. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. He pleaded not guilty and his case has been pushed to the fall as investigators continue gathering evidence.
Reiner is currently on the Emmy ballot for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his Season 4 work and leads expert predictions in a field that also includes Jon Bernthal, also from “The Bear,” and several cast members from “Shrinking.”
