Matthew McConaughey says his very first television role helped put a serial killer behind bars, a story he shared Friday during an appearance at Filmland, an annual film festival held in Little Rock, Arkansas. The actor recounted the tale alongside praise for director Christopher Nolan, with whom he worked on 2014’s “Interstellar.”
McConaughey’s screen debut came in a December 1992 episode of “Unsolved Mysteries,” where he played Larry Dean Dickens, a Marine from Pasadena, Texas, who confronted a man exposing himself to children. That man, Edward Harold Bell, later murdered Dickens. Viewers who watched the reenactment recognized Bell from McConaughey’s portrayal, and the tip contributed to a joint FBI and Panamanian National Police operation that captured him in Panama City on February 14, 1993. Bell eventually admitted to committing eleven murders, though he was convicted only in Dickens’ death. He died in a Texas prison in 2019 at age 79.
McConaughey characterized his role in the capture with characteristic humor, telling the Filmland audience he was willing to “toot my own horn a little bit” by noting that authorities caught Bell within weeks of the episode airing, crediting his performance with helping identify the killer.
The actor also reflected warmly on his creative partnership with Nolan, describing him as demanding but deeply committed on set. He said Nolan is typically the first person to arrive each day and the last to leave, comparing the director’s work ethic to climbing a mountain: first up and last down. McConaughey noted that phones essentially disappear during production, with cast and crew fully absorbed in the work and cut off from outside distractions. He balanced that intensity with a lighter observation, saying Nolan possesses a genuine sense of humor despite never appearing to actively pursue laughs.
McConaughey’s comments came as he continues promoting his return to high-profile film work, with the actor citing his collaboration with Nolan as a formative experience in his career.
