Natalia Dontcheva, the Bulgarian-born actress who spent more than three decades building a steady, respected career on French stages, television dramas and film sets, has died at 56 following what her family described as a decade-long illness. Her agent, Laurent Savry, confirmed her death on Saturday, August 1, without disclosing a cause.

Dontcheva was best known to television audiences as Julie Derville, a recurring character opposite Thierry Lhermitte in the French adaptation of the British hit “Doc Martin,” which aired on TF1. She appeared in 26 episodes across four seasons, filmed largely along the coast of Brittany, before the role ended in 2015.

Born in Sofia on December 31, 1969, Dontcheva grew up in a household shaped by performance. Her father, Plamen Donchev, worked as an actor in Bulgaria, and though she initially weighed careers in medicine or international relations, an early film offer arranged through a family friend redirected her path. She relocated to France in 1989 at age 20 and trained at a Paris acting conservatory, then spent much of the 1990s working in theater before moving into television and film.

Her screen credits extended well beyond “Doc Martin,” including “Joséphine, ange gardien,” “Julie Lescaut,” “Les Petits Meurtres d’Agatha Christie” and “Les Rivières pourpres.” On film, she appeared in “Lady J” (Mademoiselle de Joncquières) alongside Cécile de France and Edouard Baer, and in “Sashinka,” a performance that earned her a Prix Iris nomination for best supporting actress in Quebec. In 2019, she took the stage with Daniel Auteuil in a production of Molière’s “Le Malade imaginaire.”

Tributes arrived quickly from colleagues and family. Her stepson, film producer Hugo Sélignac, wrote on Instagram that Dontcheva had waged a ten-year fight against her illness and could “finally rest,” thanking her for the twenty-five years she spent as partner to his father, director Arnaud Sélignac. Actress Christine Citti called her “beautiful, funny, strong, loving and dignified.” Tatiana Gousseff, her co-star on “Doc Martin,” recalled photographing Dontcheva during their seasons filming in the port town of Doëlan, remembering the laughter on set and later seeing her portray Dorothy Parker on stage.

Savry described Dontcheva as a performer who earned lasting respect from directors, crews and fellow actors through the precision of her work rather than pursuit of fame. Her final screen credits date to 2024.
