Live-Action ‘Gargoyles’ Reboot Is Dead at Disney+, Creator Confirms

Greg Weisman says the James Wan-produced project is finished, part of a wider slowdown in Disney+ live-action orders.

A live-action reimagining of “Gargoyles” is no longer moving forward at Disney+, ending a project that had been quietly developing at the streamer since 2023. Original series co-creator Greg Weisman confirmed the news in an interview with ComicsOnline at Fan Expo Chicago, saying flatly of the live-action version: “That’s dead.” A source close to the project separately confirmed the cancellation.

The reboot had been in the hands of “Annabelle” writer Gary Dauberman, who was attached to write and run the show, with James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster executive producing alongside Disney Branded Television. The plan centered on Goliath, leader of a clan of stone warriors cursed a thousand years earlier and awakened in modern Manhattan, a premise drawn from the original 1994 animated series that ran three seasons on Disney’s syndicated afternoon block. That show built a devoted following for its darker tone, Shakespeare-inflected villains, and a voice cast that included Keith David, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Ed Asner.

No official reason has been given for killing the project, but its fate tracks a broader pullback at Disney+ on live-action expansions of its animated library. The streamer has also scrapped a live-action Power Rangers series and canceled “Wonder Man” after a second season had already been announced, and its recent D23 presentation was comparatively light on new series orders. Even flagship franchises have slowed: nothing has been confirmed for live-action Star Wars or Marvel television beyond already-completed seasons of “Ahsoka” and “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Weisman said he has no visibility into whether an animated continuation remains possible, leaving open a claim made earlier this year by original Puck voice actor Brent Spiner, who suggested on a podcast that Disney Television Animation was developing a revival of the show in its original format. Weisman’s uncertainty on that front means Spiner’s account remains unconfirmed. Dauberman and Wan both have other projects moving forward, including Wan’s “Paranormal Activity 8” and Dauberman’s screenplay for a “Five Nights at Freddy’s” sequel.
