Jon Hamm says the true story behind his new MGM+ series “American Hostage” carries an unexpected charge given today’s politics, despite depicting events from nearly 50 years ago. Speaking Sunday at The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio during the Toronto International Film Festival, Hamm and co-creator Shawn Ryan discussed why a 1977 hostage standoff in Indianapolis still resonates now.
The series casts Hamm as Fred Heckman, a real-life Indianapolis radio reporter pulled into a life-or-death crisis when a man named Tony Kiritsis, played by Giovanni Ribisi, took a mortgage broker hostage and demanded to be interviewed live on Heckman’s call-in program. Hamm said the production fought to keep the title “American Hostage” because of the layered meaning it carries beyond the literal kidnapping.
He pointed to a broader theme running through the story: a segment of the population that feels overlooked or unheard in its wants and needs, a dynamic he sees echoed in the culture today. The title, he suggested, also raises a subtler question about whether Kiritsis himself was a hostage to his own version of the American Dream.
Ryan noted that Heckman’s position in the story is especially fraught. The character has spent decades building a professional reputation on truthful reporting, only to find himself suddenly cast as an impromptu hostage negotiator responsible for two lives. Hamm drew a parallel to the Patty Hearst case from the same era, describing the Kiritsis standoff as one of the earliest examples of a local crime story exploding into national news.
The project began as a scripted podcast starring Hamm, which won Best Scripted Podcast at the 2023 Signal Awards before Sony Pictures Television developed it into an eight-episode series. MGM+ ordered the adaptation with Ryan and Eileen Myers as co-creators, alongside executive producers including Hamm, Sharon Hoffman and Connie Tavel. The cast also includes Kristoffer Polaha, William Jackson Harper, Mireille Enos, Jonathan Tucker and Kat Cunning, with production based in Winnipeg. “American Hostage” premieres on MGM+ September 20.
