Noah Wyle returned to the Emmys stage Monday night to collect the same trophy he won a year earlier, taking Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for HBO Max’s “The Pitt” for the second consecutive season. The win places him among a small group of performers who have won lead acting honors for a show’s first two seasons, joining Bryan Cranston, Daniel J. Travanti, Bill Cosby and E.G. Marshall, and marking the first time anyone has repeated in the category since Cranston’s run on “Breaking Bad” in 2009.
Wyle beat a field that included Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses,” Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Rufus Sewell for “The Diplomat” and Mark Ruffalo for “Task.” Taking the stage, he called the moment overwhelming and turned first toward the men he’d defeated, telling them their work inspired and taught him, with particular praise for Oldman, whom he described as the benchmark actors his age had spent careers chasing. He then thanked HBO and his colleagues at Warner Television before noting, with a nod to the cast’s early call time, that he’d be back on set within hours.
Wyle plays Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the chief attending physician anchoring the show’s real-time depiction of a Pittsburgh emergency room. Season two carried the character through a planned sabbatical complicated by unresolved trauma, material that built directly on the acclaim Wyle drew for the show’s freshman run.
“The Pitt” entered Monday’s ceremony as the most nominated series of the year with 25 nods, and left with the night’s top prize for Outstanding Drama Series alongside Wyle’s individual win. He was also nominated separately for directing an episode and for his role as an executive producer, giving him a chance at a third statuette that ultimately didn’t materialize.
The win extends a career arc that began decades earlier on “ER,” where Wyle earned five consecutive supporting-actor nominations playing Dr. John Carter without ever winning. Speaking backstage, he described “The Pitt” as something between an answered prayer and a dream fulfilled, crediting the show’s creator, John Wells, with giving him a second chance at the kind of role that had eluded him earlier in his career.
Wyle’s co-star Katherine LaNasa, who also won a supporting Emmy for the show last year, joined him in celebrating the show’s second straight run of major wins before the cast returned to filming new episodes the following morning.
