Sally Field Wins Fourth Emmy for “Remarkably Bright Creatures”

The two-time Oscar winner took home her fourth Emmy for playing a grieving widow who bonds with an octopus, using her speech to speak up for creative voices and Canada.

Sally Field looked genuinely stunned Monday night when she heard her name called for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. At 79, her win for Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures” made her the oldest actress to claim the category, surpassing the record Jessica Tandy set in 1987 for “Foxfire.” It marked Field’s tenth Emmy nomination and fourth win, following victories for “Sybil” in 1977, “ER” in 2001 and “Brothers & Sisters” in 2007.

Field played Tova Sullivan, a widowed night janitor at a small-town aquarium who forms an unlikely bond with a giant Pacific octopus, in the film adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s novel. Taking the stage, she admitted she hadn’t expected to win and told the crowd she needed to speak quickly before praising the source material and the team who built the film around it, including director Olivia Newman and the effects artists behind the octopus character, Marcellus. She stumbled briefly over the author’s name before recovering with a joke that drew laughs from the room.

Field used part of her time onstage to reflect on a career spanning more than six decades in entertainment, describing her gratitude for a life spent working in the arts. She argued that creative voices carry real weight and warned against letting them be diminished, remarks widely read as a reference to the pending merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that has drawn antitrust scrutiny and unease from parts of the creative community. She also spoke warmly about Canada, where “Remarkably Bright Creatures” was filmed, calling the experience welcoming and urging viewers to protect the relationship between the two countries.

The film itself entered the night already honored, having won the Emmy for outstanding television movie at an earlier ceremony. Field told interviewers this year that she related to her character’s age and irritability, and noted how rarely film roles center on older women.

Her competition in the category included Sarah Pidgeon, Claire Danes, Carey Mulligan and Sarah Snook, with Danes drawing a second nomination for her work as an executive producer on “The Beast in Me.” For Field, Monday’s win extended a run of acclaim that began with “Sybil” nearly fifty years ago and now stretches across three network eras of television.
