The third season of NBC’s sitcom Lopez vs. Lopez features comedian George Lopez diving into his childhood memories. He uses comedy to explore unpleasant past traumas and the possibility of reconciliation within his family.

This season emphasises Lopez’s troubled childhood and relationship with the holidays. The holidays, which are often a time for family gatherings, were often tough for him. In a candid Christmas episode, Lopez recalls a childhood incident involving a gasoline-powered toy plane that collided with his grandmother’s top. This encounter was both humorous and disturbing.

Lopez reflected on the difficulties of being estranged from his family, particularly around the holidays. “When you’re estranged from your family, there’s nothing worse than the holidays,” he told me. “I’ve been estranged from most of my family my whole life.”

Rita Moreno, who plays George’s grandma, has returned, which is a highlight of this season. Lopez expressed his thanks for working with the 93-year-old actress and praised her incredible vitality. To add authenticity, the production team reproduced a certain white blouse his grandma used to wear.

“She means so much to our culture but also a lot to me,” she remarked. “To do scenes that are funny yet dramatic with her is, aside from Mayan, the best gift I’ve ever had.”

Looking ahead, Lopez hinted at dramatic turns in future episodes and said he hopes to reach 100 episodes, a number he accomplished with his previous show, “The George Lopez Show,” which ran from 2002 to 2007.

Lopez has praised young actor Brice Gonzalez for his role as Chance. He described the nine-year-old as a “full-blown actor” contributing to the show’s familial dynamics. “When we’re acting with him, we don’t see a child—we see a full-blown actor,” Lopez said.

Lopez is inspired by comedians such as Tim Allen, who have effectively converted their stand-up experiences to television. Initially unsure if he could accomplish the same, Lopez learned that his life was full of funny and dramatic content.

“The more truthful or real the scene is, the more comfortable I am,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication to authentic storytelling.

New episodes of “Lopez vs. Lopez” are currently showing on NBC. The show provides viewers with a humorous and moving look at family reconciliation and personal growth.
