Streaming leader Netflix and Balaji Telefilms Ltd. have formalized a long-term creative partnership designed to amplify Indian storytelling on the global stage. Under the agreement, Balaji divisions—Balaji Motion Pictures and Balaji Telefilms Digital—will produce an array of projects, including an untitled series already in advanced development.
Ekta Kapoor, Joint Managing Director of Balaji Telefilms, said, “At Balaji Telefilms, storytelling has always been at the heart of everything we do — whether through cinema, television, or digital platforms. Partnering with Netflix, the world’s leading storytelling platform known for its premium content and constant innovation, is a big moment for us”.
Monika Shergill, Vice-President of Content at Netflix India, praised Kapoor’s track record. “Ekta has been a force in shaping Indian entertainment with unforgettable stories and characters that made it to pop culture, even before hashtags existed. Her creative instinct and deep understanding of the audience’s pulse have consistently set her apart for more than two decades”. Shergill added that the collaboration will bring stories “in rooted ways” to serve India’s diverse taste profiles.
This pact arrives as Netflix ramps up investment in its India slate. Earlier this year, the streamer raised its annual content budget to $18 billion, earmarking a significant portion for original Indian productions, with at least 28 new titles slated for 2025. Industry experts note that such partnerships bolster Netflix’s strategy to deepen local engagement while exporting regional narratives worldwide.
Regulatory leaders have underscored India’s ambition to become a global content hub, encouraging light-touch policies and investment in creative education to fuel future growth. The Netflix-Balaji alliance aligns with these goals, bringing together Balaji’s deep catalogue of serial dramas and Netflix’s data-driven commissioning model to craft stories that resonate both domestically and abroad.
Balaji Telefilms and Netflix have previously teamed up on hits such as Kathal, Pagglait, Jaane Jaan and Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare. The new collaboration seeks to expand that roster, marrying Balaji’s narrative heritage with Netflix’s global reach to chart fresh territory for Indian series and films.
