Hugh Jackman is once again leaving the door open for more time with the adamantium claws, telling a studio audience that Wolverine’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe “isn’t necessarily out of the question.” In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, reported by TheWrap, the actor said he is “never saying ‘never’ ever again” about playing the X-Men hero, despite having framed 2017’s Logan as his definitive farewell.
Pressed on whether he might appear in upcoming Marvel films, Jackman answered “maybe” and joked that after ten outings as Wolverine, the studios already have enough material to build an AI version of him. He added that he truly meant it when he vowed to retire the character, “until the day when I changed my mind,” referring to the moment he agreed to join Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Jackman had spent years insisting Logan would be his last turn as the mutant, telling an interviewer in 2021 that the lack of any approach from Marvel boss Kevin Feige meant a comeback was “not on the table” and that treating Logan as his “last season” helped him say goodbye. He later explained that the idea of finally pairing Wolverine with Deadpool changed his thinking, describing a sudden “knowing deep in my gut” that the team-up was right. Deadpool & Wolverine went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, earning about $1.34 billion worldwide and strengthening Marvel’s interest in keeping both characters active in its shared universe.
Marvel executives have been careful not to confirm where Jackman might appear next. In July, Feige said there had “absolutely been discussions” about future stories for Deadpool and Wolverine but declined to name specific projects, even as fan speculation swirls around ensemble films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Reaction to Jackman’s latest comments has been mixed. Many viewers welcomed the possibility of more Wolverine, while others argue that repeated returns risk diluting what Logan achieved as a rare, definitive ending for a superhero. One recent commentary suggested that any further appearances, beyond Deadpool & Wolverine’s surprise encore, could diminish both the character and the actor’s achievement, and called for space for a new performer to eventually take on the role. For now, Jackman has stopped short of confirming any deal, but his refusal to close the door has kept Wolverine’s cinematic future firmly in play.
