Apple TV+ has canceled The Last Frontier after a single season, ending the Alaska-set thriller just two weeks after its finale. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the decision on Friday; Apple has not announced a reason for the move, plans for a wrap-up, or efforts to continue the series on another platform.
The show launched Oct. 10 and ran for 10 episodes, with new installments released weekly through Dec. 5. Jason Clarke starred as Frank Remnick, a U.S. marshal stationed in Alaska whose quiet posting turns into an emergency response after a prison transport plane crashes in remote wilderness and releases violent inmates. As Remnick hunts fugitives, the series layers in a deeper conspiracy that pulls federal agencies into the manhunt.
Apple ordered the drama straight to series in 2023 and promoted it as a high-stakes chase set against brutal weather and long distances, with Remnick suspecting the crash was part of a plan with “far-reaching and devastating implications.” The season drew on a sizable ensemble that included Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum and Alfre Woodard. Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio created the series and served as executive producers, with Clarke also executive producing.
The cancellation lands as streamers keep tightening renewal standards and trimming lineups after short runs, putting pressure on shows that need time to find an audience. Apple TV+ has cut several one-season dramas and comedies in recent years, a pattern that can leave viewers with unresolved threads even when a season closes out its main pursuit.
In interviews tied to the season finale, Clarke argued the show’s last hour worked because Remnick’s arc felt “earned,” pointing to a character driven by duty and grief rather than superhero swagger. Bokenkamp and D’Ovidio described their target as a propulsive thriller that still had room for questions about justice and identity, with the creators comparing the desired viewing experience to comfort food: satisfying, simple, and meant to disappear into for an hour.
