The Mint team has released a first-look clip and artwork for the eight-part series, the debut television project from writer-director Charlotte Regan. The BBC said the show will land on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this spring, after the first four episodes premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on Feb. 15.
Set around a dominant crime family, the story follows Shannon (Emma Laird), a 22-year-old searching for romance as family power and fear shape daily life. Her attraction to Arran (Ben Coyle-Larner, known to music fans as Loyle Carner) sparks a relationship with someone from a rival crew that has just arrived, tightening the screw on both households. The BBC’s description frames the series as “soaring romance, crushing heartbreak and what love might feel like when everyone outside of your family is terrified of you,” while placing its attention on the emotional toll inside the home rather than the mechanics of criminal enterprise.
The production, made by House Productions and Fearless Minds, was filmed in and around Glasgow last year, with Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, Lewis Gribben and Lindsay Duncan filling out the core family circle. Angus Lamont produces, and BBC Studios is handling global sales.
Regan, who broke out in film with Scrapper, has described Mint as a long-gestating idea: “It’s the project that’s stuck with me endlessly and I could never get it out of my head,” she said in a statement announcing the series. In Scotland, the project also received £500,000 through Screen Scotland’s Broadcast Content Fund, underlining the public backing behind a creator-led half-hour drama that pairs romance with a family’s internal crisis.
