HBO has sent The White Lotus to the French Riviera for season four, and this time Mike White is aiming his satire at Cannes. The network said production began this week in France, with filming set for Cannes, St. Tropez and Monaco, plus Paris locations tied to the shoot. The story itself will stay on the Côte d’Azur, where the Cannes Film Festival will serve as a major backdrop for the new season.
That choice gives White a ripe target. The festival mixes celebrity worship, money, media theater and luxury branding, all familiar pressure points for a series built on watching rich people perform themselves in paradise. White recently told Entertainment Tonight that the new season will be “fun and funnier,” and described it as “more wickedly playful” than the Thailand-set third season, which leaned harder on spiritual anxiety and family damage.
The cast reflects that shift toward glamour and public spectacle. HBO’s confirmed lineup includes Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Rosie Perez, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Sandra Bernhard, Ari Graynor, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Laura Smet, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Corentin Fila, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long and Dylan Ennis. The mix pairs sharp comic performers with actors who can play status, vanity and menace, which has long been White’s sweet spot.
The season also extends a strategy HBO has barely tried to hide. Drama chief Francesca Orsi said last year that the show was likely heading back to Europe, and the network renewed the series for a fourth season before season three even premiered. The confidence comes with financial logic: past seasons have boosted tourism interest around their hotel settings, turning each new location into a global ad for luxury travel wrapped inside a murder mystery.
There is a risk in moving the show so close to the machinery of celebrity culture. Cannes has been mocked so often that it can flatten into easy satire, and White now has to top three seasons that already turned wealth, sex and self-delusion into a house style. Still, the festival gives him a sharper public arena than any previous setting. In Sicily and Thailand, people came to hide. In Cannes, they arrive to be seen.
