Masters of the Universe Heads to Prime Video July 22 After Rocky Box Office Run

The $170 million Mattel adaptation moves to streaming barely seven weeks after its theatrical run fell short of expectations.

“Masters of the Universe” will begin streaming on Prime Video on Wednesday, July 22, just 47 days after its June 5 theatrical debut. The rapid turnaround reflects a familiar pattern for Amazon MGM Studios releases, but also signals a studio eager to move past a box office run that fell well short of expectations.

Director Travis Knight’s adaptation of the Mattel toy franchise pulled in $113.3 million worldwide against a production budget reported between $170 million and $200 million. Domestically, the film opened to $29.4 million and finished its run with $64.6 million, numbers that left little room to recoup costs before ancillary revenue. Audiences graded it a B on CinemaScore, while critics were somewhat kinder, awarding it a 67% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, exiled from his home planet of Eternia for fifteen years before the Sword of Power calls him back to confront Skeletor, played by Jared Leto. Camila Mendes appears as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan, known to fans as Man-At-Arms. The ensemble also includes Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Charlotte Riley and Morena Baccarin. Chris Butler wrote the final script after Aaron and Adam Nee, along with Dave Callaham, developed earlier drafts from a story credited to the Nee brothers with Alex Litvak and Michael Finch.

The project spent eighteen years in development at Escape Artists before reaching screens, outlasting numerous directors and stars once attached to the role of He-Man. It marks only the second live-action attempt at the property, following the 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, a version now remembered as a cult curiosity rather than a franchise launchpad.

Before its Prime Video subscription debut, the film reached digital storefronts on July 21, when Amazon MGM made it available to rent or purchase across Prime Video, Apple TV and Google TV. That premium video-on-demand window has become standard practice for major theatrical releases seeking early revenue while box office momentum fades. Whether the streaming release reverses the film’s fortunes, or simply confirms them, will depend on viewership Amazon rarely discloses in detail.
