Chuck Russell, the filmmaker who guided Jim Carrey to stardom in “The Mask” and reshaped the Freddy Krueger franchise with “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors,” died Wednesday at his home in the San Diego area. He was 74. His wife, Ania, told The Hollywood Reporter she found him unresponsive and called 911, but fire department personnel were unable to revive him. His attorney confirmed the death to Variety, and a cause has not been disclosed.

Born Charles Raymond Russell in Park Ridge, Illinois, on May 9, 1952, he studied at the University of Illinois, where he wrote and directed one-act plays before heading to Los Angeles. He broke into the industry as a production assistant on “Cannonball!” and worked his way up through supervisory roles on low-budget features before serving as an executive producer on the 1981 slasher film “Hell Night.” On that set he met screenwriter Frank Darabont, beginning a creative partnership that would shape much of his early career.

Russell wrote the screenplay for the 1984 horror film “Dreamscape,” a modest hit that caught New Line Cinema’s attention and led to his directorial debut on “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors,” which he co-wrote with Darabont. Released in 1987, the film reinvigorated the franchise, pulling in nearly $44.8 million and coming close to matching the box-office haul of the original. The pair followed it with a well-regarded remake of “The Blob” the next year.

Russell’s biggest commercial success came with 1994’s “The Mask,” a live-action comic adaptation that made a global star of Jim Carrey and marked Cameron Diaz’s screen debut, ultimately grossing more than $351 million worldwide. He went on to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1996’s “Eraser,” Kim Basinger in 2000’s “Bless This Child,” and Dwayne Johnson in his first leading role in 2002’s “The Scorpion King.” His final directing credit was 2024’s supernatural horror film “Witchboard,” which he also co-wrote, capping a career of twelve feature films.
