Sam Raimi and Stephen King Team Up for “Desperation” Movie

The horror novel gets its first theatrical treatment decades after King's early review helped launch Raimi's career.

Searchlight Pictures has landed a theatrical adaptation of Stephen King’s 1996 novel “Desperation,” bringing together King and horror producer Sam Raimi for the first time in either filmmaker’s career.

“Final Destination: Bloodlines” directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are set to direct the feature, with Ryan Brennan writing the screenplay. Raimi will produce through his Ghost House Pictures banner alongside longtime partner Robert Tapert.

The novel follows a group of travelers along a desolate stretch of Nevada’s Highway 50 who are rounded up and imprisoned by a sheriff possessed by an ancient, malevolent force called Tak, using pretexts ranging from drug arrests to a fabricated hostage rescue.

Lipovsky and Stein built their reputation on 2025’s “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” a sequel praised for inventive, meticulously staged death sequences, as well as the 2018 sci-fi feature “Freaks.” Both are also producing “Desperation” alongside executive producers Romel Adam and Jose Cañas. Raimi’s most recent credit was directing and producing “Send Help” for 20th Century Studios, a project that broke box office records earlier this year.

The pairing carries symbolic weight beyond the production credits. Decades ago, King’s enthusiastic review of Raimi’s low-budget debut “The Evil Dead” helped establish the film’s credibility at a moment when it needed outside validation, a connection Raimi has cited repeatedly throughout his career. Their collaboration on “Desperation” marks the first time the two have worked together directly.

This will be the novel’s first theatrical treatment. A television movie adaptation aired in 2006, starring Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, Annabeth Gish, Henry Thomas and Matt Frewer. “Desperation” was originally published alongside a companion novel, “The Regulators,” which shares characters but unfolds in a separate, alternate storyline. Searchlight executives Taylor Friedman and Cameron Chidsey are overseeing the new adaptation, reporting to the studio’s heads of production and development, DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.
