Andrew Guest, showrunner and co-creator of Marvel’s “Wonder Man,” pushed back Saturday against theories that the show’s abrupt cancellation was a promotional gimmick, telling fans in a TikTok video that a second season had been actively in preparation before Disney and Marvel reversed course.
“This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works,” Guest said, adding that no cast or crew scheduling conflicts factored into the decision. The series, which follows a struggling actor auditioning for a superhero film while hiding real powers, had prompted online speculation that the cancellation was itself a meta twist playing off the show’s Hollywood-satire premise.
Marvel had renewed “Wonder Man” for a second season in March, only to cancel it this past week and release its writing staff to pursue other work. Guest said the reversal caught him and his collaborators off guard just as production was gearing up. “Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared,” he said, noting the writers’ room had been scheduled to begin this month and filming was set to start early next year. He had already written the season’s first episode and outlined the rest of the story arc, which he described the team as feeling good about.
Guest said Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Destin Daniel Cretton and Ben Kingsley had all wanted to continue the series, and that “a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel” determined the show no longer made sense for the studios, despite having made sense months earlier. He did not elaborate on what drove that internal shift. Abdul-Mateen II, who earned an Emmy nomination for the role, responded to the news separately by saying simply, “That’s life.”
The cancellation arrived shortly after Mahershala Ali confirmed his own departure from Marvel’s long-delayed “Blade” reboot, adding to a string of setbacks for the studio’s television slate. Guest also addressed fan frustration over Marvel’s track record with stories centered on characters of color, acknowledging the criticism directly in his statement.
“Wonder Man” starred Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor drawn into a scheme involving a washed-up performer, played by Kingsley, and a director remaking a fictional superhero film. Cretton, who recently directed “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” co-created the series with Guest and directed its premiere episode. The cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.
