Reggie Bannister, who spent nearly four decades battling the villainous Tall Man on screen as the shotgun-wielding ice cream vendor Reggie in the “Phantasm” horror series, has died at 80. His wife, Gigi Bannister, said he died early Sunday morning at the couple’s cabin in Crestline, California, adding that he was at peace and surrounded by comfort in his final moments.

Bannister’s health had declined sharply in recent months, leaving him largely immobile, and the family had moved him into full-time care after Gigi’s own medical limitations made it unsafe for her to lift or transfer him at home. She said he had been exposed to Agent Orange while serving in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War and later developed both Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

Filmmaker Don Coscarelli, who wrote the character with Bannister in mind and directed all five “Phantasm” films, said in a statement that he lost his hero. Coscarelli described meeting Bannister at 18, when the actor was performing music at a Long Beach dive bar before joining Coscarelli’s first feature. Reggie, an easygoing ice cream salesman turned reluctant action hero, appeared across “Phantasm” (1979) through “Phantasm: Ravager” (2016), earning Bannister a reputation fans and colleagues nicknamed the hardest working man in horror.

Beyond the franchise, Bannister built a career spanning dozens of independent films, including a memorable turn opposite Bruce Campbell in Coscarelli’s “Bubba Ho-Tep,” along with roles in “Wishmaster” and “The Mangler Reborn.” He remained active as a musician throughout his life, releasing several albums and frequently performing alongside Gigi, whom he married in 2001 after the two met through fellow horror actor Michael Berryman. The couple later ran a production company together, Production Magic Inc., producing live events, music and film projects.

Born in Long Beach on September 29, 1945, Bannister is survived by Gigi and his daughter, Ellen. His family plans private memorial services followed by a public celebration for fans and fellow musicians.
