Producer Christine Vachon says Pedro Pascal has found a role he was destined to play in Todd Haynes’ “De Noche,” a film that nearly collapsed entirely before Pascal stepped in to save it. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival Friday, Vachon praised both Pascal and co-star Danny Ramirez, calling their performances in the finished film “a revelation.”
The romantic drama traces an unexpected love affair between a detective and a schoolteacher in 1930s Los Angeles, unfolding against a backdrop the film’s writer-director has described as marked by corruption and global tension. Joaquin Phoenix originally developed the project alongside Haynes and co-writer Jonathan Raymond, envisioning himself in the lead role opposite Ramirez.
Phoenix exited abruptly in the summer of 2024, just days before filming was scheduled to begin, throwing the production into disarray. Vachon has previously described his departure as devastating, noting that it cost Haynes the chance to make a film that year altogether.
Pascal entered the picture after crossing paths with Haynes on the awards circuit while promoting “May December,” and the two had already collaborated on “Materialists.” Vachon recalled the casting coming together almost by chance, saying she found herself wondering aloud whether Pascal might be right for the part, and the idea simply worked. She added that Pascal’s off-screen reputation for warmth matches how he comes across in person, addressing a question she said people frequently ask her about him.
Reflecting on the production’s turbulent path, Vachon offered an optimistic read on how things ultimately unfolded, suggesting the delay may have led the film to the cast it was meant to have. She said Pascal’s performance is extraordinary, and that Ramirez matches him beat for beat, with both actors delivering work she described as far exceeding expectations.
