Michael Mann will unveil a new cut of “Miami Vice” at Beyond Fest this month, marking the first public screening of a reworked version of the 2006 crime thriller two decades after its theatrical release underwhelmed at the box office.
Billed as “Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut,” the 4K screening will run as part of a 20th-anniversary program at the Directors Village theater in Westwood, with Mann in attendance. The film, based on his own 1980s television series, drew mixed reactions on release but has steadily built a following among critics and filmmakers who cite its visual style and use of high-definition digital cinematography as ahead of its time.
The screening anchors what organizers describe as the festival’s most ambitious lineup yet. Running September 23 through October 6 at venues including the Egyptian Theatre, the Mubi Theatre at the Aero and the Mubi Theatre at the Los Feliz 3, the 2026 edition pairs world premieres with restorations of genre touchstones. Bong Joon-ho’s “The Host” gets a new 4K remaster, while David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” screens in its North American premiere as a fresh restoration. A 35mm print of Ken Russell’s “The Devils” and a retrospective built around actor Bruce Dern, including a new documentary on his career, round out the repertory offerings.
Beyond the classics, the festival opens with Lance Oppenheim’s “Primetime,” starring Robert Pattinson, and closes with Bassam Tariq’s “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.” Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Look Back” and Duncan Jones’ “Rogue Trooper” both make their U.S. premieres, and Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour Elon Musk documentary screens as a West Coast premiere.
American Cinematheque Director of Programming Chris LeMaire said the festival is strongest when a premiere, an emerging filmmaker, a large-format classic and a rare tribute can share the same program, describing this year’s selections as reflective of that range.
Tickets for the festival went on sale Thursday. Beyond Fest is presented by Mubi and produced in partnership with the American Cinematheque, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit institution.
