Jeff Probst Unveils New ‘Survivor 51’ Twist That Could Triple the Prize

Jeff Probst tells The Hollywood Reporter how a revived coin-flip challenge could send "Survivor's" prize money climbing season after season.

“Survivor” is entering what host Jeff Probst calls its “Open Era,” and the first sign of what that means is a prize-money twist he predicts will reshape the show’s economics for seasons to come.

Ahead of the season 51 premiere, Probst told The Hollywood Reporter that the series is reviving the coin-flip mechanic introduced during its milestone 50th season, when YouTuber Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson helped design a challenge that let contestant Rick Devens double the $1 million grand prize by correctly calling a coin toss. This time, the format carries higher stakes.

A player in season 51 will flip a coin for a chance to push the prize pool to $2 million. If the flip misses, that money doesn’t disappear — it rolls forward into season 52, where a contestant will flip for a potential $3 million pot. Probst said the rollover will continue building until someone finally lands the call, then reset and start again. He called it the most inventive prize-money twist in the history of unscripted television, describing the accumulating jackpot as something almost alive, its scale limited only by how long it takes a player to win the flip.

Probst said the pressure to innovate began building even before season 50 wrapped, as the production team grappled with how to follow a season built entirely around fan input and franchise nostalgia. That anxiety became the seed of the Open Era, a philosophy under which any twist or mechanic from the show’s 25-year history can return, sometimes with new rules attached. Probst was careful to note the concept doesn’t mean every past gimmick is coming back. He singled out the Season 42-era “Hourglass,” officially called Change History, as one twist he doesn’t expect to revisit, without ruling out other retired mechanics finding new life.

Season 50 wrapped in May with contestant Aubry Bracco winning after 26 days in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji, where the show has filmed for nearly two decades. Season 51 marks the first installment of the Open Era and the next test of whether Probst’s promise of unpredictability can keep a quarter-century-old format feeling new to viewers and returning players alike.
