The two-part season finale of “Lioness” closed with a twist that upended what viewers had spent eight episodes believing, and the cast is now unpacking a turn that reframes the entire season.
The Taylor Sheridan spy thriller, which follows a CIA task force led by field commander Joe McNamara, played by Zoe Saldaña, and overseen by station chief Kaitlyn Meade, played by Nicole Kidman, spent much of season three building toward what looked like a decisive victory. Instead, the finale, titled “The Unraveling,” revealed that the season’s true antagonist had been Aaliyah Amrohi, a character introduced in season one as a minor, sympathetic figure who evolved into a vengeful architect of Joe’s abduction.
Michael Kelly, who plays senior CIA official Byron Westfield, told The Hollywood Reporter that the personal nature of the attack forced the show’s characters into unfamiliar emotional territory. “When something like this happens close to home, you see these characters react a little bit differently,” he said, noting that the CIA doesn’t typically confront threats this intimate.
The season marked a structural departure for the series, weaving a dual timeline that traced a mission in Ukraine six months before the abduction alongside the present-day fallout. Joe’s ordeal forced her to explain her job to her own daughters after a first abduction attempt drove the family into hiding, telling them simply that evil doesn’t quit. Saldaña has said preparing for the role this season was more demanding, physically and mentally, than in previous years.
Paramount+ has not announced a fourth season, though the signs point toward renewal. The season three premiere drew 7.1 million viewers across platforms in its opening week, among the platform’s stronger fall debuts, and both Saldaña and Kidman have spoken publicly about wanting to continue. Saldaña has said she signed on for at least three seasons of the show. Sheridan’s track record offers a point of comparison: his series “Mayor of Kingstown” received a season renewal just over a week after its second-season finale aired.
