Yeon Sang-ho’s “Paradise Lost” Sells to 118 Countries Before Release

The low-budget psychological thriller, made for about 500 million won, opens in Korea Wednesday after sold-out festival runs in Toronto and Busan.

Yeon Sang-ho’s “Paradise Lost” has sold to 118 countries before opening in its home market, and distributor CJ ENM says the overseas deals alone have covered the film’s production cost. The psychological thriller, directed by the “Train to Busan” filmmaker, cost about 500 million won ($375,000) to make. The average Korean feature costs more than 5 billion won. CJ ENM handles international sales and announced the milestone Monday. The company credited buyers’ trust in Yeon and its own sales network built over years of selling Korean films abroad.

A representative described the film as a “deeply felt exploration of family and motherhood” whose emotions “are resonating across cultures.” Buyers include Twin in Japan, The Jokers Films in France and Well Go USA in North America, with further deals in Spain, Benelux, the Middle East and the Philippines.

Festival audiences have backed the sales pitch. The film premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, in the Special Presentations section, where all four official screenings sold out, a total of roughly 2,300 seats. It then played as a Gala Presentation at the Busan International Film Festival, where four screenings also sold out. Its U.S. premiere comes Nov. 1 at the Hawai’i International Film Festival, in the Spotlight on Korea section, with a second screening Nov. 4.

Kim Hyun-joo, who appeared in Yeon’s Netflix series “Hellbound,” leads the cast alongside Bae Hyeon-seong in his first starring film role. Yeon co-wrote the script with Ryu Yong-jae, adapting the 2025 novel “Black Inferno” by Oh Seong-eun. Wowpoint, Yeon’s company, produced it with CJ ENM.

The release schedule is already set. “Paradise Lost” opens in South Korean theaters on Oct. 21, then reaches Taiwan on Oct. 23 and Singapore on Nov. 5. Well Go USA releases it in North America and Vietnam on Nov. 6, and Indonesia follows Nov. 13.

Yeon arrives with momentum. His zombie thriller “Colony,” which premiered at Cannes in Midnight Screenings, drew 5.95 million admissions in Korea in May and ranks among the year’s top local earners. Paradise Lost is his second theatrical release of 2026, and its pre-sales eased pressure on a domestic opening that no longer has to cover costs.
