The Super Mario Bros. Movie has done it again! The latest adaptation of the beloved video game franchise has shattered sales records with its recent release.

In just under two weeks since hitting theaters in the United States, the animated film has grossed over $500 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation to date.

Variety reports that the film has already raised over $260 million in the US alone, with international sales bringing in an additional $248 million.

The new installment of Mario’s adventures has surpassed the successful box office numbers of other video game adaptations like “World of Warcraft” ($439 million) and “Detective Pikachu” ($433 million).

The film has set several other impressive records as well, including the best five-day opening in US history, surpassing the previous record held by 2009’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” It also had the biggest global opening in the history of animated films, beating out even “Frozen 2.”

Despite the massive success, reviews of the film have been mixed. While viewers have praised the animation and voice acting, critics have criticized the script for being aimed mainly at a younger audience.

This difference of opinion is reflected in the statistics on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ score hovering around 60 points and the viewers’ score at a much higher 96 points.

The film debuted in US theaters on April 5th. Fans around the world eagerly anticipated the release, and the high sales numbers indicate that the hype was justified.
