The Future of Zelda: No Remakes or Remasters in Sight, Says Eiji Aonuma

Fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise have been treated well during the Switch era, with new releases, a remake, and a remaster, alongside the legacy of the franchise on Switch Online. However, the desire for more remakes or remasters, particularly of titles like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, may have to be put on hold.

Aonuma’s Revelation: Nintendo’s Disinterest in Zelda’s Past

In an interview with RTLNieuws, Eiji Aonuma, the producer and current guardian of The Legend of Zelda, discussed Nintendo’s perspective on the franchise. Unfortunately, for those eagerly anticipating news about remakes or remasters of past Zelda games, Aonuma revealed that Nintendo has shifted its focus to the future.

He stated, “We always strive to offer something that surpasses our previous productions. In that sense, we are no longer primarily concerned with our older games. We prefer to concentrate on the future.”

The Switch Era’s Abundance of Zelda Releases

Considering that the Switch is approaching the end of its lifecycle, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may serve as the grand finale for the franchise on the hybrid console. As a result, no further releases are expected in the near future.

However, it is worth noting that the Switch has already been blessed with a remarkable lineup of The Legend of Zelda titles. Alongside iconic releases like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, fans have enjoyed the Zelda remake: Link’s Awakening and the remastering of Zelda: Skyward Sword. While plans for relaunching previous installments remain uncertain, it is possible that such releases may occur on Nintendo’s next gaming system.

The future of The Legend of Zelda franchise lies ahead, with Nintendo’s focus on exploring new horizons and delivering experiences that surpass previous offerings. While the hopes for more remakes or remasters may be temporarily dashed, fans can anticipate exciting adventures in the forthcoming chapters of the beloved franchise.
