Sony’s PlayStation 5 has reached a significant landmark, achieving sales of 50 million units worldwide. This milestone, announced by Sony, was reached on December 9th, 2023, marking a pivotal moment in the console’s journey.
The achievement is particularly notable as it brings the PS5’s sales performance almost in line with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, now trailing by only one week in comparative sales timelines.
The PlayStation 5’s launch was initially plagued by severe stock shortages, a consequence of the global component shortage. This situation led to consistent out-of-stock issues during the console’s first two years in the market, posing significant challenges to its sales performance. However, despite these early obstacles, the PS5 has demonstrated remarkable resilience and popularity among gamers.
Surge in Sales and Strategic Moves
Notably, the PS5 saw a substantial increase in sales in Europe in November 2023, with figures soaring by 376% compared to November 2022. This surge is partly attributed to multiple discounts offered by Sony throughout the year, as part of its strategy to reach a target of 25 million PS5 shipments within the financial year.
In contrast, PS5 sales in the US saw a slight decline in November year-on-year. This decrease is linked to the resolution of stock issues in November 2022, which had caused a significant spike in sales at that time.
