Doom from 2016 is considered one of the most popular shooters of recent years. The game was still called Doom 4 during an early phase of development, however.
Now new gameplay from that time shows that the violent battle against hellish monsters might have played out completely differently.
Doom 4 trailer shows a different gameplay
This legendary shooter series, Doom, is most famous for its fast and bloody firefights with dangerous monsters. The YouTube channel Noclip now shows, however, that the Doom 4, which never appeared, would possibly have chosen a completely different path.
In the short gameplay video, a soldier is sneaking through a sewer and encounters a monster. Despite the fact that the character has his characteristic shotgun with him, it gives an unexpected atmosphere for the series.
That monster acts almost like it’s in a horror game, running along the ceiling and hiding from the player behind a corner. The threatening swelling music only intensifies this mood. In addition, the video shows a few seconds of the melee combat system which would have been utilized in Doom 4.
Doom 4 was simply not enough Doom
In the end, the gloomy and quieter atmosphere might actually have played its part in Doom 4 never coming out. One of the developers explained in an interview with IGN that although Doom 4 wasn’t a bad game, it failed to capture the core elements of Doom.
Doom 4 originally was developed by id Software and first announced in 2008. The development, however, was redirected in the following years.
In their video, the YouTube channel Noclip also showcases early gameplay from the game that would ultimately become Doom from 2016, though id Software did decide to return to the roots of the series. The game’s success has also allowed them to develop a sequel.
