Seoul-based film company Finecut has secured the international distribution rights to the thriller-drama “A Girl With Closed Eyes.” Directed by Chun Sun-young in her feature film debut, the movie stars Kim Min-ha and Moon Choi. It tells the story of a woman accused of murder who claims her victim was actually her kidnapper from years ago.
Finecut picked up the rights ahead of upcoming film festivals where “A Girl With Closed Eyes” will debut. These include the Toronto International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival in October. Kim Min-ha is well known for her leading role in the Apple TV+ series “Pachinko.” Moon Choi has appeared in several popular Korean films.
The film is backed by Solaire Partners, a venture capital firm that has supported many successful Korean movies. These include the Academy Award winning movie “Parasite” and box office hits like “Extreme Job” and “12:12: The Day.” Director Chun Sun-young previously earned praise for her short film “Good Night” at the Cannes Film Festival.
Finecut will represent several other Korean films at upcoming festivals. This includes Hong Sang-soo’s “By The Stream,” which screened at Locarno Film Festival where Kim Min-hee won an award. They will also show “Noise” at the Toronto International Film Festival and the animated “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The acquisition highlights Korea’s growing international film industry. Both new directors and established stars like Kim Min-ha are attracting global audiences. As “A Girl With Closed Eyes” debuts, viewers will watch founder Chun Sun-young and actress Kim Min-ha to see if they find similar success on the world stage.
